How HBOT Enhances Chemotherapy

Cancer cells often thrive in hypoxic (low-oxygen) environments, which can make them resistant to standard treatments. HBOT works by delivering 100% oxygen at increased atmospheric pressure, which floods the body’s tissues and the tumors themselves with oxygen.

Increased Sensitivity: Increasing oxygen levels inside cancer cells can act as a sensitiser, making them more vulnerable to certain chemotherapy drugs.
Improved Drug Delivery: HBOT may increase tumor perfusion (blood flow), allowing chemotherapy agents to reach the tumor more effectively. Synergistic Effects: Studies have shown that combining HBOT with specific agents, such as carboplatin or cisplatin, can significantly reduce tumor volume more than chemotherapy alone. Timing Matters: Evidence suggests that for maximum benefit, chemotherapy should be administered during or immediately after the HBOT session while oxygen levels in the tissue remain elevated.

Managing Side Effects and Complications
Beyond fighting the tumor itself, hyperbaric chambers are frequently used to manage the debilitating side effects often associated with chemotherapy and radiation. Chemo Brain: HBOT has shown promise in improving memory and critical thinking for patients experiencing “brain fog” following intensive treatment. Fatigue and Anemia: By stimulating bone marrow to increase red blood cell production, HBOT can help alleviate treatment-related fatigue and anemia. Healing Mucositis: It can speed the healing of ulcers and inflammation in the digestive tract (mucositis) caused by aggressive chemo-radiation protocols. Radiation Necrosis: HBOT is a long-standing, approved treatment for repairing tissue and blood vessels damaged by radiation therapy
